KMA WASTE MANAGEMENT DIRECTORS TO SUBMIT SANITATION REPORT

The Kumasi metropolitan assembly ( KMA ) waste management directors have been quest to submit their report and recommendations on Sanitation for the year 2018 and the ways forward to year 2019.
The Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi has asked the sub-metro environmental officers and waste management directors to submit a report on the Ashanti regional capital’s waste and sanitation challenges.
The waste management directors and officers were also asked to include in their report a recommendation for study and appropriate action.
He said, the move places a responsibility on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) ‘Keep the City Clean and Green’ campaign on waste management and environmental administrators.
"The next thing is that, I'm expecting that they will get me a detailed brief of what took place during the Metro Environmental walk and exercises. They will have to give me the problem statement, the real situation and how they are going to deal with it.
"I want them to be responsible towards their area," he noted.
He issued the directive during a field inspection trip around the Garden City, dubbed 'Metro Environmental Walk' on Friday.
KMA Chief Executive, as part of the campaign to end the bad behaviour of the Public toward sanitation and keep the environment clean and green, charged the citizenry to be directly accountable for sanitation in their immediate environment.
The walk gave Mr Antwi a first-hand appreciation of the situation in the various sub-metros including Subin, Krofrom, Bantama Nhyiaeso, and other areas.
He believes pragmatic plans by the administrators are crucial in tacking the challenge.
Mr. Isaac Bassanyin, head of KMA’s Environmental Health and Sanitation, revealed that five people have been prepared for prosecution and 30 abatement notices have been served to those dumping waste at unauthorised areas in Kumasi.
He said KMA has placed bins at vantage points but there are recalcitrant persons who are still dumping on streets and pavements and that calls for need to apply the by-laws.
The waste management director, Mr.Prosper Kotoka, on his side hinted that the Assembly is almost done with a new liquid waste treatment plant to improve sanitation at the Oti landfill site and this will give a lasting solution to the sanitation challenges in the Kumasi metropolis.
