ANGRY RESIDENTS DEMONSTRATE OVER POOR MANAGEMENT OF OTI LANDFILL
Angry residents in Kumasi in the Ashanti region on Monday 25th March, 2019 embarked on a peaceful demonstration over poor management of Oti landfill in the Asokwa municipal.
About eight hundred residents around the Oti landfill site have staged a demonstration against the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for improper management of the Oti landfill site.
On the residents view of point, the poor management of the landfill has led to a unbearable stench all over the community in recent time.
The protest, which has so far stalled major activities at the site, began around 7:35 am on Monday, March 25, 2019.
Waste trucks, tricycles, and other waste management device were been left up containing felt awaiting to be discharge but they were unable to do so due to the protest.
The demonstration was organised and led by the assembly member and unit committee members of the area.
Hon. Elliot Ofosu Bano, the assemblyman for the area said they have served KMA waste management directorate several notice about mismanagement of the landfill site yet there has been no action therefore, their protest would go unabated until a decisive action is taken by the city authorities.
"We want KMA to hand over the landfill and the liquid waste treatment plant facility to the Asokwa Municipal Assembly which has jurisdiction over the Atonsu-Kuwait community" they claimed.
They further on claimed that the KMA was struggling to manage the about 1,200 metric tonnes of waste dumped daily at the landfill site, posing environmental hazards to them.
The Oti community, also known as Atonsu-Kuwait, houses the landfill site that sits on a 100-acre land surrounded by residential buildings.
Mr. Bano said the KMA had failed to fumigate the place and only did so yesterday (Sunday) 24th March, 2019 upon hearing of their intention to embark on demonstration.
“We can't further take any flimsy excuses from KMA. We only want the landfill site to be either co-managed by the Asokwa Municipal Assembly or be handed over completely for proper management since the Oti community is no more under KMA,” he added.
