ATWIMA NWABIAGYA NORTH DISTRICT COMMENCED ONE WEEK CLEAN UP EXERCISE

A week long sanitation exercise within sixteen (16) electoral areas in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District in the Ashanti Region has been commenced.

The District Chief Executive Officer for Atwima Nwabiagya North, Hon. Rebecca Yeboah has officially lunched a one week clean up exercise within her jurisdiction.

She said the exercise, according to the plan of the assembly will be carried out intermittently through all communities on Saturdays marked across the various electoral area.

On an interview to damaksanitationwatch reporter ( Robert Ampofo), during the cleaning exercise, Hon Rebecca stated clearly that the move in question was called to play following the abysmal standard of sanitation witnessed by the district.

"Dumping of refuse at unapproved areas, littering etc is due to lack of education on Sanitation and indiscipline". She said.

Choked drainage system, flood among other environmental challenges characterise a number of communities within the district, adding that before her assumption as the DCE, the condition of sanitation was totally an eyesore.

NDC DEMANDS WITHDRAWAL OF DECEPTIVE IPAC COMMUNIQE

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) notes with concern a Communique issued by the Electoral Commission after the
IPAC meeting held on Wednesday, 27th March,2019.
At the meeting under reference, the EC presented for discussion its programmed activities for 2019. While the press
release issued by EC covers aspects of the ensuing discussions we note that there are portions that do not represent the
true reflection of what transpied at the IPAC meeting.
We take particular notice of a portion of the EC press release which states as follows:-
“The Commission will compile a new voters register ahead of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections “.
We wish to state emphatically and without any fear of contradiction, that no decision was taken on this matter.

In fact, the
compilation of a new voters register was only mentioned in passing by the EC during discussion on limited registration.
There certainly was no “extensive deliberations “ on this particular matter.
The absurdity of such a claim, is amply evident from the Commission’s own Statement, which captured the agenda for
discussion as follows;
*Preparations for the 2019 District Level Elections
*Inspection of Political Party Offices
*Updates on the compliance of the Political Parties with Audit requirements.
The compilation of a new voters register was not one of the items on the agenda for discussion, thus cannot warrant a basis
for any decision by the political parties. A careful analysis of the subsequent points in the statement, specifically, point
1,2,4,5,and 6, shows that all the issues raised were clearly in sync with the items on the agenda.

It is self evident, and judging from the flow of the Press Release and its relationship with the agenda above, that item 3 is
totally incongruous to the real issues discussed at the meeting, let alone any purported decision be made on the subject.

The NDC holds the view that, a matter as important as the compilation of a new voters register, has to be discussed in a
manner that will ensure that every aspect and the implication of its implementation are thoroughly discussed to the
satisfaction of all stake holders and in accordance with due process, time tested rules, procedures and conventions before a
decision is made.

DamakSanitationWatch-News, attached a copy of the electoral commission press statement below

A matter as delicate as such has to be discussed thoroughly and all the related consequences, ramifications
considered before arriving at a decision.

A decision of this nature has grave bearing on the credibility and integrity of our Elections and therefore has to be tabled
properly as part of an IPAC Agenda, discussed exhaustively with all relevant stakeholders, before the EC can communicate
such a MAJOR DECISION taken at an IPAC meeting to the general public.

No such matter was tabled as part of the agenda,
nor was it discussed, either exhaustively or thoroughly as the EC has sought to portray in their communique.

Curiously the communique was signed by only the Chairperson of the Commission instead of the representatives of the
various political parties.

Can the EC explain why this is so? The NDC therefore disassociates itself from the communique and
demands it's withdrawal as it is not in consonance with conclusions of the IPAC meeting.

It may interest you to note that, there were decisions taken which did not find space in the communique. One such
decisions was for the EC to decentralize the limited registration exercise to the Electoral Area level in accordance with the
time tested practice in all limited registration exercises since the beginning of the fourth Republic.

The NDC cautions the EC to be mindful of its core mandate to act as a credible impartial referee in the country's electoral
processes and to play by the rule books.

Signed:
Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah
General Secretary - NDC

ANGRY RESIDENTS DEMONSTRATE OVER POOR MANAGEMENT OF OTI LANDFILL

Angry residents in Kumasi in the Ashanti region on Monday 25th March,  2019 embarked on a peaceful demonstration over poor management of Oti landfill in the Asokwa municipal.

About eight hundred residents around the Oti landfill site have staged a demonstration against the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for improper management of the Oti landfill site.

On the residents view of point, the poor management of the landfill has led to a unbearable stench all over the community in recent time.

The protest, which has so far stalled major activities at the site, began around 7:35 am on Monday, March 25, 2019.

Waste trucks, tricycles, and other waste management device were been left up containing felt awaiting to be discharge but they were unable to do so due to the protest.

The demonstration was organised and led by the assembly member and unit committee members of the area.

Hon. Elliot Ofosu Bano, the assemblyman for the area said they have served KMA waste management directorate several notice about mismanagement of the landfill site yet there has been no action therefore, their protest would go unabated until a decisive action is taken by the city authorities.

"We want KMA to hand over the landfill and the liquid waste treatment plant facility to the Asokwa Municipal Assembly which has jurisdiction over the Atonsu-Kuwait community" they claimed.

They further on claimed that the KMA was struggling to manage the about 1,200 metric tonnes of waste dumped daily at the landfill site, posing environmental hazards to them.

The Oti community, also known as Atonsu-Kuwait, houses the landfill site that sits on a 100-acre land surrounded by residential buildings.

Mr. Bano said the KMA had failed to fumigate the place and only did so yesterday (Sunday) 24th March, 2019 upon hearing of their intention to embark on demonstration.

“We can't further take any flimsy excuses from KMA. We only want the landfill site to be either co-managed by the Asokwa Municipal Assembly or be handed over  completely for proper management since the Oti community is no more under KMA,” he added.

KMA WASTE MANAGEMENT DIRECTORS TO SUBMIT SANITATION REPORT

By: Akgri M. Daniel

The Kumasi metropolitan assembly ( KMA ) waste management directors have been quest to submit their report and recommendations on Sanitation for the year 2018 and the ways forward to year 2019.

The Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi has asked the sub-metro environmental officers and waste management directors to submit a report on the Ashanti regional capital’s waste and sanitation challenges.

The waste management directors and officers were also asked to include in their report a recommendation for study and appropriate action.

He said, the move places a responsibility on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) ‘Keep the City Clean and Green’ campaign on waste management and environmental administrators.
"The next thing is that, I'm expecting that they will get me a detailed brief of what took place during the Metro Environmental walk and exercises. They will have to give me the problem statement, the real situation and how they are going to deal with it.
"I want them to be responsible towards their area," he noted.
He issued the directive during a field inspection trip around the Garden City, dubbed 'Metro Environmental Walk' on Friday.

KMA Chief Executive, as part of the campaign to end the bad behaviour of the Public toward sanitation and keep the environment clean and green, charged the citizenry to be directly accountable for sanitation in their immediate environment.
The walk gave Mr Antwi a first-hand appreciation of the situation in the various sub-metros including Subin, Krofrom, Bantama Nhyiaeso, and other areas.
He believes pragmatic plans by the administrators are crucial in tacking the challenge.

Mr. Isaac Bassanyin, head of KMA’s Environmental Health and Sanitation, revealed that five people have been prepared for prosecution and 30 abatement notices have been served to those dumping waste at unauthorised areas in Kumasi.
He said KMA has placed bins at vantage points but there are recalcitrant persons who are still dumping on streets and pavements and that calls for need  to apply the by-laws.

The waste management director, Mr.Prosper Kotoka, on his side hinted that the Assembly is almost done with a new liquid waste treatment plant to improve sanitation at the Oti landfill site and this will give a lasting solution to the sanitation challenges in the Kumasi metropolis.

Climate strike on March 15: Public Eye calls for solidarity with protesting students

Zurich / Lausanne, March 8, 2019

Public eye

At #FridaysForFuture, young people take the planet's future into their own hands and denounce the indifference and selfishness of the powerful. Persistently and radically they challenge established conditions and dangerous habits. The young people have every reason to do so - and they have our support. Because global responsibility (and thus climate justice) starts with us.

In 1972, the study "The Limits to Growth" was presented in St. Gallen. In it, the authors warned of humanitarian crises and irreparable environmental damage by unchecked growth and hoped at the same time that mankind would succeed in reaching new and sustainable states of equilibrium. The study became a bestseller, but hopes remained unfulfilled. In 1990, the International Climate Council (IPCC) presented its first report in Geneva, urgently warning against global warming and rising sea levels if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced. In the meantime, we have arrived at the fifth IPCC report, but policy measures are still in the pipeline.

The young people who have been striking in Switzerland since December were born into a climate policy standstill and rightly call out: "We are here! We are loud! Because you steal the future from us! "Not only do they pose the obvious and embarrassing question," why have not you done all these years, you knew it? " Moreover, they do the only sensible thing in this situation: they no longer hope for the insight of the powerful, but themselves initiate the necessary reversal. School and politics should be proud of this commitment instead of responding to threats and unexcused absences.

The climate strike movement also criticizes the environmental balance sheet of corporations and at the same time rejects their claims to ownership of the resources of our planet. It criticizes the decades-long failure of politics to place global climate justice and thus the well-being of all people above private profit interests. Increasingly desperate try some property wardens and climate deniers to defame the strikers as blinded. It is the other way round: The youthful movement is powerful and at the same time light, because it no longer intimidates and controls itself from outdated and demonstrably harmful ideologies. In view of the state of our world, demands for abandoning the dogma of growth, the end of the fossil era, and effective political intervention in the economy are only logical and pragmatic.

The new climate movement is also so powerful because it makes climate and environmental protection not primarily our all consumer behavior, but the policy responsible. It does matter what and how much is consumed. But systemic problems call for systemic solutions, and that requires bold political measures.

Public Eye is convinced that a grandson-capable world is possible. The recognition and respect of our ecological limits is an indispensable prerequisite for this. Effective climate and environmental protection is also inseparable from democracy and social justice.

The global climate strike movement shows how much strength and creativity is released when we tackle the transformation of our economic and lifestyles together, when we struggle with our contradictions without being discouraged by those in the dark, when we develop concrete solutions and new perspectives together : In our minds and in our everyday lives, on the streets and squares, in schools and colleges, in companies and associations, in politics and at the polls.

Therefore, we join the climatic strikers on 15 March and call for solidary Mitdemonstrieren. The Public Eye Secretariat will be closed on the next #FridayForFuture.

KUMASI GUTTERS CHOCKED

KUMASI GUTTERS CHOCKED  WITH TOILET; KMA FAILURE ON TACKLING SANITATION AND DECONGESTION ISSUES

7th March, 2019..12:47am

Kumasi gutters chocked with toilet due to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) failure on tackling sanitation and decongestion issues which is a threat to public health.

The main motive of president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's government when signed to office on 7th January, 2017 is to make Ghana-Accra, the cleanest city in West African.

A media friend of mine, Mr. Ben Barnes write, "some of us beg to ask whether Kumasi is not part of government sanitation agenda where KMA is failing to live up to that task".

Ashanti region, Kumasi, precisely is vigorously working assiduously toward curbing sanitation challenges spending million of cedis but in recent times KMA have gave up the fight in identifying a liable medium of educating the public on the need to be abreast with KMA's by-laws on sanitation and decongestion living the hopes of the public on a sky rocketing.

Tackling or fighting sanitation in Kumasi (The Garden City) by the KMA led by the metropolitan chief executive, Mayor Osei Assibey Antwi turned nine-day wander. It seems to be time wasting and resources. For a decades now the state of sanitation and decongestion in Kumasi has not been improved due to lack of proper supervision and the unfortunate taskforce used by the authorities.

The authorities spend whopping sum of monies to decongest the city yet, the more they tried, the more they failed causing financial lost to KMA.

Toilet facilities built all over the city, including Asafo-market,
Achaemfour market buildings etc. had connected their pipes directly into the gutters discharging waste into it in daylight.

Drivers and traders at the area complained bitterly about the poor sanitation situation at hand, said it has been reported to the city authorities but they failed to respond to their call.

"We are even afraid, our live is not safe in case of likable outbreak of disease because the place stings". Some traders lamented and appealed to the city authorities to act swiftly to remove the toilet facility from the place entirely or put in place a proper measure to avoid disaster.
